Have an existing collection of ebooks? Import them into Libris on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android device!

LibrisDesktop is a simple to use tool that enables you to import ebooks from your personal computer to your Libris bookshelf on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android device. The tool is a Java application that will run on any computer that has Java version 1.5 or later. Don't have Java? Download it using the 'Get Java' button on this page.

iMac users will have a suitable Java environment by default and can Launch LibrisDesktop by selecting it in Finder. Windows users may need to associate the .jar file type with the Java Runtime.

Importing Books

The first time you run launch LibrisDesktop it will ask you to select a place on your computer to store your desktop bookshelf. Select or created a folder where you would like LibrisDesktop to store your bookshelf. The app will store the book files and associated metadata in this location.

After selecting a desktop location you will see the main desktop screen. This screen shows the list of books in your desktop bookshelf. These are the books you wish to make available for import to your iPhone / iPod Touch / Android device. Initially your desktop bookshelf will be empty. To add your first book click the 'Add' button which will bring up the Add Book screen.

First select the book file you wish to add. Note that this book file must be in one of the supported formats: plain text, Libris, Palm Doc, non-secure eReader, or non-secure Mobipocket. If you have books in your collection that are in a different format, you must convert them to one of the supported formats before adding them. LibrisDesktop does not check if the book is in an acceptable format. Any other format will be assumed to be text, which may produce undesirable results.

The book file is the only required element for adding a book. However, you may add additional items such as an image for the book cover, the book title, author, category, and a description of the book. These pieces of information are optional, but make will make it much easier to look at and use your Libris bookshelf on your device.

After you have entered all the information for the book, finish adding it by clicking on the 'OK' button. The app will return to the main screen and you will see the book you just added in the list. The book is now available for import from Libris on your iPhone / iPod Touch / Android device.

To import the book, go your iPhone / iPod Touch / Android device and launch the Libris application. Go to the app settings by touching the center of the screen to bring up the menu bar. Touch the Settings icon on the menu bar. You may need to slid the menu bar to the left or right to bring the Settings icon into view. On the Settings screen touch the Desktop icon. On the Desktop settings screen enter the IP number of your computer. This will be the number in the X.X.X.X form shown in bold on your LibrisDesktop main screen (192.168.0.114 in the sample image above). Be sure to enter the number exactly as shown by the LibrisDesktop app. Note that for iPhones and Android devices you must use a Wifi connection for desktop import. Also note that the LibrisDesktop app must be running while you are importing from your device. The app acts as a bookshelf server and your device will only be able to connect while the app is running.

After exiting from settings, return to the Libris bookshelf screen on your device. Touch the screen to bring up the menu bar and then touch the Get Books icon. From the Get Books screen, select the Desktop icon. The Desktop import screen will appear and after a few seconds the list of books available for import from your personal computer will appear. Scroll the list back and forth with horizontal swipes, or tap the cover of the book you want to select the book. When the book is selected it's title, author, and other information will be displayed beneath the cover image. To import the book, tap the screen in the description area to bring up the menu bar, and then touch the Load icon.
